Brewer Gains Ashby, Paxton, Loses Orange

(Boston) - Senator Stephen M. Brewer (D-Barre) announced today that the Senate voted unanimously to pass legislation that would redraw the House and Senate legislative districts. The plan was crafted by the Special Joint Committee on Redistricting chaired by Senator Stanley C. Rosenberg and Representative Michael J. Moran.

“I will miss representing the towns of Orange, Warwick and Royalston. Although my district has changed, the friendships and great relationships that I have developed over the years will remain with me.” Brewer will add the towns of Ashby and Paxton to his area of representation, which will now be known as the Worcester, Hampden, Hampshire and Middlesex district.

The Special Joint Committee on Redistricting was tasked with studying and proposing a new division of the Commonwealth into 9 Congressional, 40 Senatorial, 160 Representative and 8 Councilor districts. The changes were based on population figures from the 2010 U.S. Census and reflect demographic changes in the state during the past decade.

“Senator Rosenberg worked diligently on this plan and I applaud his efforts to include all interested parties in this process. The Committee has established a smart plan and I am excited to serve my new communities,” Brewer continued.

The Committee actively encouraged public participation in the redistricting process. In all, 13 public hearings were conducted.
The new maps are online at www.malegislature.gov/redistricting.

Barre Food Bank Shops Locally

The Barre Food Bank at Christ Episcopal Church in South Barre has launched a program it hopes will provide food and support local farms at the same time. The food bank is issuing "Barre Bucks" which are redeemable at local farms, the Saturday farmers' market and farm stands. The $5 denomination food cards can be used to buy fresh vegetables, fruit, dairy, meat and other food items from participating local merchants.

David Petrovic of the Food Bank program, said the goal is to offer healthy locally produced food items to Food Bank clients. Clients meeting other income guidelines for food stamps or the WIC program would likely qualify for Barre Bucks, he said. Farms and merchants will redeem the cards they accept for face value at the food bank. For information, call the food bank program at 978-355-4519 or 355-4061

Life's List of Things That Have Names
But We Don't Know What They Are ...

Look. Right There. On the ends of your shoe laces. What are those little plastic things called? Dave knows. They are called Aglets -- From the French aguilette - meaning a point. Now you can say, "Hey, I think I'll go to the store and buy a box of aglets. And maybe a pound of mullions while I am at it."

Photo albums are all right here.

Sen. Brewer Files Web Accessibility Legislation

Sen. Steve Brewer has filed Senate 1565, a bill that would require that all organizations seeking state grants certify in writing that they are aware of internet accessibility requirements in the Americans with Disabilities act and will work to comply with them. The ADA regulates handicapped access to buildings and includes design principles that ensure that  web sites include tags and labels which help visually-impaired people use the information on web pages.

Rep. Gobi Named to Redistricting Committee

BOSTON—State Rep. Anne M. Gobi (D-Spencer) has been named to the Special Joint Committee on Redistricting which will draw new district boundaries for the state’s Congressional, Senate, Representative and Governor Councilor districts.

“I take this role very seriously,” Rep. Gobi said. "This Committee will actively encourage participation in the redistricting process by federal, state, and municipal officials, public interest groups, and any concerned citizens.”

The Committee on Redistricting will hold a minimum of 12 hearings across the state. The Committee website, www.malegislature.gov/redistricting provides redistricting information to the public, publicizes the hearing and meeting schedule, and provides a way to submit questions, comments, or materials. The first hearing will be held Saturday, March 26th at the Van Sickle Middle School Auditorium in Springfield beginning at 10am.

The 2010 Census resulted in Massachusetts losing one congressional seat, forcing the state legislature to divide the state into new congressional districts.

Active Soldiers' FID Cards Won't Expire

State Rep. Anne M. Gobi (D-Spencer) and State Sen. Stephen M. Brewer (D-Barre) said that the House and Senate were successful in getting House Bill 2229 (An Act Relative to the issuance of firearm identification cards for persons serving on active duty in the armed forces of the United States) to the Governor’s desk before the 186th legislative session came to a close.
